Pre-Departure Checklist for Nepal
Preparing for a trip to Nepal requires a thorough pre-departure checklist to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. This list covers essential documents, equipment, and arrival procedures.
1. Passport and Visas
Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of entry into Nepal.
Visa on Arrival (VOA): Most nationalities can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu.
Process: You will need to fill out a VOA form, either online in advance or at a kiosk in the airport.
Fees: Fees vary depending on the duration of your stay (e.g., 15, 30, or 90 days). Payment is typically made in U.S. dollars, but other major currencies are often accepted. It’s advisable to have cash on hand.
Documents: You will need your passport, the completed VOA form, and a recent passport-sized photograph.
2. Travel Insurance
Mandatory Coverage: Travel insurance is highly recommended and often mandatory for high-altitude treks.
Key Coverage: Ensure your policy specifically covers:
Emergency Medical Evacuation: This is critical, as air rescues in remote, high-altitude regions are the only option for serious medical emergencies and can be very expensive.
Medical Expenses: Coverage for treatment of injuries or illnesses, including altitude sickness.
Trip Protection: Covers trip cancellation, interruption, and delays to protect your financial investment.
Check Altitude and Activity Limits: Confirm that your policy covers the specific altitude you will be reaching and the activities you will be doing, such as trekking and climbing.
3. Flight Confirmation
Check Status: Before heading to the airport, verify the status of your flight to check for any delays.
Notify Your Outfitter: If there are any changes to your flight schedule, promptly inform your tour operator or guide so they can adjust your airport transfer.
4. Right Equipment
Review Checklist: Refer to the detailed equipment list provided by your tour operator.
Test Your Gear: It is crucial to test all your equipment, especially new boots, to ensure they are comfortable and broken in. This will help prevent blisters and other issues on the trail.
Pack Smartly: Pack efficiently to avoid delays at baggage claim. A single, large bag that fits everything is recommended over multiple small ones. Your tour operator may provide a waterproof duffel bag for the trekking portion of your trip.
5. Airport Transfers
Included Service: Airport transfers are typically included in your tour package.
Arrival Process:
Upon arrival at TIA, proceed to immigration to get your visa and go through customs.
Collect your luggage from the baggage claim carousel.
Exit the arrival hall.
Look for your guide or a representative from your tour company holding a placard with their company’s name and your name.
They will escort you to your hotel.
