Overview
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is an extraordinary journey into the heart of the eastern Himalayas, leading to the foot of the world’s fifth-highest mountain, Mt. Makalu ($8,485$m). This 22-day expedition is designed for trekkers seeking a true wilderness experience, as it traverses the remote and ecologically diverse Makalu Barun National Park. The trail is one of the least crowded in Nepal, offering a rare opportunity to witness traditional Sherpa and Rai cultures in their most authentic forms while navigating through the dramatic Arun Valley—the deepest valley in the world.
The trek is a physical and visual masterpiece, characterized by its rapid gain in altitude and varied landscapes, from subtropical forests to high-alpine meadows and glacial moraines. You will cross the legendary Shipton La Pass ($4,216$m), named after the explorer Eric Shipton, which serves as a gateway to the spectacular Barun Valley. Standing at the base camp, you are rewarded with a staggering “wall of ice” panorama featuring Makalu’s sheer western face, alongside views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Baruntse.
